When a Honda Maintenance Minder code such as A1, B12 or B137 has been serviced, the code does not disappear on its own. It has to be reset. If you skip the reset, the system keeps showing the old code and, worse, it stops tracking your next service interval accurately.

Before You Reset
Only reset the items you actually had serviced. This matters more than most owners realise. The Maintenance Minder tracks each sub-item on its own counter, so if you reset everything after only an oil change, the system will believe your transmission fluid, brake fluid and coolant were all replaced too — and it will not remind you again until those full intervals have elapsed.
If a shop performed the work, ask whether they reset it. Most dealers do this as part of the job. If you had only part of a combined code done, reset only those items using the individual-item method below.
Method 1: Touchscreen or Driver Information Interface (most 2015 and newer Hondas)
This covers the majority of current models — Accord, Civic, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey, HR-V, Passport and Ridgeline with the colour centre display.
- Turn the ignition to ON. The engine does not need to be running, but the vehicle must be fully powered, not in accessory mode.
- Press HOME, then select Settings. On some models this is a physical SETTINGS button.
- Select Vehicle (or Vehicle Settings).
- Select Maintenance Info or Maintenance.
- Select Reset.
- Choose Reset All if every item in the code was serviced, or select the individual sub-items that were done.
- Confirm. The oil life should return to 100% and the wrench icon should clear.
Method 2: SEL/RESET Button on the Steering Wheel (roughly 2006–2015)
Many Hondas of this era use a small SEL/RESET button on the steering wheel or the instrument cluster.
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Press SEL/RESET repeatedly until the oil life percentage or maintenance code is displayed.
- Press and hold SEL/RESET for about 10 seconds. The display will begin to blink.
- Release the button, then press and hold it again for about 5 seconds.
- The oil life should reset to 100% and the code should clear.
If the display blinks but does not reset, you released the button too early on the second hold. Repeat the sequence.
Method 3: TRIP or Reset Stalk (older models)
- Turn the ignition to ON.
- Press and hold the TRIP knob or RESET stalk button for approximately 10 seconds until the maintenance indicator resets.
How to Reset Only One Item
This is the part most guides skip. Say your display shows B137 but you only had the oil and filter changed and the tires rotated — the transmission and brake fluid were deferred.
On touchscreen models, open Settings → Vehicle → Maintenance Info → Reset and instead of choosing Reset All, select only the B main item and sub-item 1. The display will then show the remaining outstanding items — in this example it would come back as 37, correctly telling you the transmission and brake fluid are still due.
On SEL/RESET models, individual item selection is generally not available. In that case, note the outstanding work yourself and have the remaining items done at the next opportunity.
Why the Code Came Back
- The reset did not complete. The oil life must read 100%. If it reads anything else, the sequence was not finished.
- You reset the wrong item. Resetting sub-item 1 when the display wanted 3 leaves the original item outstanding.
- Another item genuinely came due. Sub-items run on their own intervals, so a fresh 2 or 7 appearing weeks later is normal, not a fault.
If the Reset Will Not Work
- Check the ignition position. Accessory mode is not enough on most models — it must be full ON.
- Make sure the engine is off on SEL/RESET models. Some will not accept a reset while running.
- Confirm you are on the right screen. The reset only works while the oil life or maintenance display is active, not the trip meter.
- Try the opposite method. Some transitional model years support both the menu and the button sequence.
- Check the owner’s manual for your exact year and trim. Menu wording changed several times across generations.
If none of that works, any Honda dealer can reset it in a couple of minutes, usually at no charge if they performed the service.
Does Resetting the Maintenance Minder Clear a Check Engine Light?
No, and this is a common source of confusion. The Maintenance Minder and the check engine light are entirely separate systems. The Maintenance Minder is a service scheduler shown with a wrench icon. The check engine light indicates a stored diagnostic trouble code from the engine management system, and resetting the maintenance reminder has no effect on it.

Does resetting the Maintenance Minder actually change the oil?
No. The reset only tells the computer that the work was done. It is a bookkeeping step. Resetting without performing the service means you lose track of when the oil was actually changed, which is how engines end up running badly overdue.
Can I reset the Maintenance Minder without a scan tool?
Yes. Every method above uses only the vehicle’s own controls. No scan tool, app or dealer software is required.
What should the oil life read after a correct reset?
100%. If it shows anything less, the reset did not complete.
Will resetting affect my warranty?
Resetting itself does not. What matters for warranty is that the required service was genuinely performed and that you can show a record of it, so keep your receipts regardless of who resets the display.
My oil life says 15% and shows a code. Is that urgent?
Not immediately. 15% is when the reminder first appears, and you typically have a few hundred miles of margin. Once it reaches 0% and turns red, the service is overdue.
