The Rear Differential Service in A16
A 6 in A16 tells you something definite about your car: it drives all four wheels. Sub-item 6 is a rear differential fluid replacement, and on an Acura that means Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. Front-wheel-drive Acuras — the ILX, the Integra and the front-drive TLX and RDX — have no rear differential and will never display it.
This is the shortest interval in the entire Maintenance Minder scheme. Acura schedules it at around 15,000 miles for the first change and every 30,000 after, and halves that under severe use. Because it falls near an oil change it very often turns up bolted onto another code, which is why owners so often assume it was part of the oil service rather than a separate line of work.
SH-AWD is not a simple differential. It vectors torque across the rear axle using clutch packs, and the fluid is part of how those clutches engage. The wrong fluid, or fluid left far too long, announces itself as a shudder or a groan on tight low-speed turns — a multi-storey car park is where most people first notice it. Once the clutch packs are worn, fresh fluid does not reliably cure it.
When Is the Acura A16 Service Due?
There is no fixed mileage for this. The Maintenance Minder models oil life from engine temperature, journey length, load and engine revolutions, so a car used for short winter trips reaches zero far sooner than one covering steady highway miles. Most Acura owners see the oil item come round somewhere between 5,000 and 12,000 miles.
You get plenty of notice. A wrench appears at 15% oil life, the warning becomes firmer at 5%, and at 0% the readout switches to a negative distance showing how far overdue the car has become. Fifteen percent is when to call the shop, not when to worry.
The differential fluid element also has its own, much shorter cycle of roughly 15,000 miles, which is why it resurfaces more often than owners expect.
A16 Across the Acura Range
Every Acura with a Maintenance Minder can produce A16 — from the ILX and Integra through the TLX and RDX to the MDX, RLX, ZDX and TSX. The service list stays constant across the range while the invoice does not, because oil capacity, fluid specification and labor time are all engine-dependent.
The 6 narrows things sharply. Only SH-AWD cars carry a rear differential, so this code cannot appear on a front-wheel-drive ILX, Integra, TLX or RDX.

Does Acura Complimentary Maintenance Cover A16?
Not in full. The complimentary program is deliberately narrow: A1 and B1 services only, running two years or 24,000 miles on model year 2023 and 2024 vehicles and just the first scheduled service within 12 months or 12,000 miles from 2025 onward. A16 contains work outside that boundary.
That does not make it worthless here. The oil and rotation component of A16 can still fall inside the program while the additional items are billed, so insist the invoice separates them. Note too that coverage transfers with the car, so a used Acura may still have time left on it.
